When a good time to buy a bike at a bike shop?

My husband is interested in buying a new bike, as it embarks in triathlon. I am also interested in buying a bike, more for recreational riding, but also with the possibility of training for a race of any kind (Although probably not a triathlon). When is the right time of year to buy at a bike shop bicycle (ie, when they are trying to get rid of the model year of delay)?
